Drilling Zornhau!

Zornhau - a diagonal cut to the head or neck. To do it, stand 30 degrees on to target, rest sword on back shoulder. Inhale. Exhale and throw the sword forward, steering with the back hand so that it cuts in a 45 degree plain. When the sword tells you to... wait for it... wait for it... STEP. Blade and foot land together...

...except the other fellow just threw a Zornhau into your blade...
Zornhau!
Yes, we finally found the right balance between study and drill by alternating the weeks. That way, people who only attend on one of the two days don't get lost, and both study and drill blocks have continuity.

And, everything aches...

No - it's a good ache.

BTW found out why round towers are the best - Vitruvius says when you strike a round tower, it only serves to compact the stone further; like an arch.

Hello,
You're right about the Zornort coming from the bind of the Zornhau to kill, but I see no evidence for bringing your feet into a line; certainly none of the texts mention it. Believe me, it's not necessary and it makes you susceptible to Ringen am Schwert because you're not in a strong stance. You simply displace your opponent's Zornhau with a Zornhau then lift your hands while am Schwert (still bound) and thrust. Be careful of looking at medieval art too closely: It's right, except when it's not. Remember, the artwork wasn't done by a Fechtmeister, and the Fechtmeister has a medieval mind that only cares if his principle is correctly protrayed (and sometimes not even that). He's never going to think of art as if it should be photgraphically correct in every detail as we expect today.

Thanks!

This is a hard one.

My study group always starts off trusting the pictures, with the proviso that sometimes they show the left-hand version of the move, or an intermediate step. In particular Goliath - on close examination - always seems to show something sane.

In this case, swinging the back leg around, advances the forward shoulder a few inches, adding reach, speed and humpty to the thrust, while also getting you out of the way.

Is that worth the added risk of Ringen am Schwert? I would have thought that the distance would be too great for that to be a major risk.

So, does perhaps the picture reflect a valid but arguable tactical choice?

I shall try this tonight and see what happens....
