20K to go...
Just finished editing the hardcopy of the penultimate 20K.

The final 20K needs  a few changes before I print it - battle needs tweaking in response to single_point's feedback on tech, and the finale needs some steroids as suggested by one of my crit circle.

Then...

There are about half a dozen items on my snagging list, mainly continuity stuff, e.g. the hero's Housecarls keep fluctuating in number.

Finally, I need to double check the feedback from my crit circle in case I've missed anything - I don't always take people's advice, but I do always consider it...

Then, at last, it's ready for beta reading and release into the wild.

Hell! There are *two*, just *two* lesbian scenes in the entire 100K - a 100,000 words that includes four pitched battles, dollops of mayhem, and two more conventional love scenes - and that's all people remember.

Penname.

Seriously though, I like that you have strong female protagonists who are just soldiers sometimes, not actively 'female'.

It's "beg pardon! Gone totally nuts!"

I picked allez allez because they used to yell that before charging into the melee. I thought it quite appropos (another French word) for launching into the hell, snakepit, er, crapshoot, er, world of publishing.

Oh, a war cry!

Right. Now I get it.

Yes, it is a bit scary. I think I know how to write a novel now, so if this one founders - as it might, since it has flaws which are impossible to unpick (mixed metaphor) without unravelling the whole - my next may find a better landing site.

The main thing now is to write another one.

Actually, we tend to call this phase I'm leaving "the arrow storm." You know what to do, you've made your equipment choices, but you still have to march 300 yards through the mud while archers shoot at you, before you get to demonstrate your worth (or not).

So, "allez, allez" is strangely appropriate.

My fencing instructor (Hungarian, trained in France between the wars) used to cry "Allez allez!" when he wanted you to stop defending and go on the attack. I didn't know what he was saying until I started taking some french, and then tracking old French military terms, and found out that it was also an exhortation to the charge.

*clank clank*
*Clunk*
Door opens.
A group of people in armour and carrying swords, guns and stuff enter the office.
"Wha. Who are you?"
"I've got a book for you to read"
Manuscript lands on desk. Hypnotised editor picks it up and starts reading.

Thats good news.

However, call me pedantic, but I would say release into the wild is when it is published. You're more trying to coax it gently into a nice fenced area where it can demonstrate its abilities at survival before you pit it against the real competition.

Good point.

However, I'd hardly call the submission process "a nice fenced area". It's more of a pitfight, I think.

I think of it more as released into the wild, with a view to surviving and acquring its own den, i.e. a publisher, unless something eats it.

no book containing the sort of major characters invented by Zornhau's fevered imagination is ever going to play nice in a fenced off area ... they would immediately burn it down, drive over it in large vehicles and then sally forth to find another novel's fenced off area and burn that down as well.

Z's novel is the literally equivalent of the killer rabbit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail!
