In other news...

At the weekend, I actually pulled off a Kurtzhau, live... or as live as you can get with masks and blunts.


I'm the bloke on the left. The chap on the right -

[info]krumphau, I think it was - made a downwards cut from his right. I made as if to swat it aside with a windscreenwiper-like "Krumphau", but insidea twisted and pointed to blade out to my left. His blade landed on mine and caught on the crossguard. Mine was now inside his guard, with hilarious consequences. 

This blow is called the Kurtzhau, or "Short Cut". It took us about half anout of Twister-with-Swords to work it out, and another hour or so to convince ourselves that it's for real. I chose the name as the LJ pseudonym for my son because, well he's three and therefore short. Har har. Now it seems, I shall be able to teach it to him.

I take it "shortcut" doesn't have the same connotations as it does in English...

LOL. "-hau" also translates as strike. We used to get plenty of those over here, so that also has connotations.

Mmmm...where did you swat it to and with which edge? To the left with a false-edge? That'd make it sound like a Schielhau...

But anyway, I think I've found some funny discussion that says a considerable deal about sword motions and body mechanics. I'm posting it as a comment on that same old entry to save space and keep everything together in one place.

Kurtzhau is a variation on the Krumphau.

In theKkrumphau, you make a swatting motion with the reverse edge, while changing feet. We call it the Windscreen Wiper of Death.

Kurtzhau, you make as if to do that, but instead keep the feet static and twist at the waist.
